Nothingness and the Meaning of Life

What is the meaning of life? Does anything really matter? In the past few decades these questions, perennially associated with philosophy in the popular consciousness, have rightly retaken their place as central topics in the academy. In this major contribution, Nicholas Waghorn provides a sustained and rigorous elucidation of what it would take for lives to have significance.

Bracketing issues about ways our lives could have more or less meaning, the focus is rather on the idea of ultimate meaning, the issue of whether a life can attain meaning that cannot be called into question. Waghorn sheds light on this most fundamental of existential problems through a detailed yet comprehensive examination of the notion of nothing, embracing classic and cutting-edge literature from both the analytic and Continental traditions.

Central figures such as Heidegger, Carnap, Wittgenstein, Nozick and Nagel are drawn upon to anchor the discussion in some of the most influential discussion of recent philosophical history.

In the process of relating our ideas concerning nothing to the problem of life's meaning, Waghorn's book touches upon a number of fundamental themes, including reflexivity and its relation to our conceptual limits, whether religion has any role to play in the question of life's meaning, and the nature and constraints of philosophical methodology. A number of major philosophical traditions are addressed, including phenomenology, poststructuralism, and classical and paraconsistent logics.

In addition to providing the most thorough current discussion of ultimate meaning, it will serve to introduce readers to philosophical debates concerning the notion of nothing, and the appendix engaging religion will be of value to both philosophers and theologians.

Heidegger and the Evolution of das Nichts 2. Nothing Under the Microscope 4. Feeling Nothing: Is the Affective Effective? The Quest for Meaning 8. Divine Inspiration? Waghorn moves with clarity and confidence between the Continental and Analytic traditions. At another level, his text reflects intellectual integrity, a refusal to question beg or dodge real impediments … It is a pleasure to read his precise analyses of Heidegger's the nothing das Nichts , and to see Waghorn tease out the key Carnapian replies … This text would be most appreciated by readers of philosophy who can see the passion and honor within robust skepticism, the power of the mind to stab itself and not be deterred or deferred by the stab and the stabs to come.

He critically explores the hypothesis that the best candidate for this, an unsurpassable kind of meaningfulness, is no-thing, no specifiable object or state of affairs. In doing so, Waghorn traverses difficult terrain concerning an ultimate kind of meaning in life that most of the contemporary philosophical literature has avoided in favour of more familiar, readily analyzable conditions.

He tackles his difficult subject with meticulous care, shows why no neat solutions are possible, and gives us much food for thought along the way. I would like … Philosophy of life definition, any philosophical view or vision of the nature or purpose of life or of the way that life should be lived. The death of Socrates, for example, gave to philosophy one of its most decisive orientations by posing the dramatic question of human immortality: Is there an afterlife or not? Philosophy could be a formula to life, or an informed way of life. Just about What is Philosophy? This text concludes with four chapters on ethics, broadly construed.

All we need to achieve efficiency is to stop arguing with the perfect order of the Universe; mental inefficiency is necessary in order to discover, through saturation, that the Laws of the Universe exist.

1. The Meaning of “Meaning”

Qty : Please note there is a week delivery period for this title. The intensification of interest in Deleuze over the last decade has coincided with the end of the linguistic paradigm in both continental and analytic philosophy. Indeed, the division between the two traditions appears to be closing and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze seems to be crucial to this convergence, as he is both indebted to the phenomenological tradition at the same time as he operates with concepts drawn from the sciences. Claire Colebrook explores these ideas and offers a new and alternative assessment of Deleuze's contribution to philosophy. She argues that while Deleuze does draw upon sciences that explain the emergence of language, art and philosophy, his own thought is distinguished by a discontinuist thesis: systems may emerge from tendencies of life but always have the capacity to operate without reference to their original aim.

In this chapter, it is argued that meaning in life is an important variable for human well-being. Literature supporting this contention is reviewed, and complexities regarding defining meaning in life are discussed. Definitions of meaning have focused on several components, two of which appear central and unique to meaning in life, suggesting a conceptual framework of meaning in life comprised of two pillars: comprehension and purpose. Comprehension encompasses people's ability to find patterns, consistency, and significance in the many events and experiences in their lives, and their synthesis and distillation of the most salient, important, and motivating factors. People face the challenge of understanding their selves, the world around them, and their unique niche and interactions within the world, and the notion of comprehension unifies these domains of understanding. Purpose refers to highly motivating, long-term goals about which people are passionate and highly committed. In the framework presented in this chapter, it is suggested that people devote significant resources to the pursuit of their purposes and that the most effective and rewarding purposes arise from and are congruent with people's comprehension of their lives.
