The Texture of Memory

I don't know when I have read a more beautifully written book and one that made me think so intensely about a particular subject. It should be required reading, not only for those interested in the Holocaust and its interpretations in art, but also as a treatise on the ways in which societies remember and transfer memories of terrible events. Anyone interested in Holocaust studies or in the murky linkage between the present and the past that we call 'memory' will find this book indispensable. Perhaps more important for academics of all stripes, The Texture of Memory provides a model of brilliantly conceived and well rendered interdisciplinary scholarship. It will prove useful as a text for graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses. This book convinces through the force of its elegance as well as its argument and evidence, taking the reader on a journey that both fascinates and informs.

This book is a study of the Berlin Holocaust Memorial Competitions of the s, with a focus on designs that kindle empathetic responses. Through analysis of provocative designs, the book engages with issues of empathy, secondary witnessing, and depictions of concentration camp iconography. It explores the relationship between empathy and cultural memory when representations of suffering are notably absent. The book submits that one design represents the idea of an uncanny memorial, and also pays attention to viewer co-authorship in counter-monuments.

The existing museums and exhibitions on Armenian Genocide are more than ten times fewer, than those devoted to Jewish Holocaust. The article discusses the factors influencing this phenomenon, and tries to reason why Armenians give preference to building monuments, rather than museums. They are also often perceived as two peoples with similar historical fates. Of these I would single out the study of the structural peculiarities of the memories 1 of the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. The question has no simple answer.
