James R. J Wildl Dis 1 July ; 54 3 : — This new book entitled Fish Diseases: Prevention and Control Strategies is edited by Galina Jeney and includes 10 chapters written by a varied but excellent group of international authors. The very broad range of topics covered in approximately pages means that a only a few specific fish diseases appear as examples; the title of the book might have been more accurately listed as Fish Health Management. Nevertheless, this volume contains information on topics not typically addressed in other fish disease texts and is especially recommended for those interested in a contemporary overview of the varied components involved in an integrated fish health management program for finfish aquaculture. In fact, the book is somewhat novel in its organization and coverage, making it a useful addition to the libraries of both educators involved in aquaculture training and for managers of finfish aquaculture programs.

Box 62, Sekota, Ethiopia. Box 34, Bishoftu, Oromia, Ethiopia. Aquaculture is rapidly growing part of agriculture worldwide. It makes up around 44 percent of total fish production globally. This increased growth of production is achieved despite facing many challenges in the aquaculture environment. Among production limiting challenges, the infectious disease takes the lion share by causing multibillion-dollar loss annually. To reduce the impact of the fish disease, it is necessary to address health constraints based on scientifically proven and recommended ways.

A direct method for controlling diseases among hatchery fish has long been sought as an alternative to the earlier technique of hand dipping. Furthermore, a direct pond treatment could be used for routine prophylaxis to eradicate diseases during their incipient stages--long before their presence becomes apparent. Several methods for applying direct pond treatments in coldwater-fish culture have been proposed. Kingsbury and Embody developed a technique for applying disinfectants directly to the inflowing water of a pond. Later, Fish advocated a method involving the recirculation of a disinfecting solution through a fish pond.

When fish are living under less than optimal conditions, their resistance to disease is reduced, and they may be infected by common diseases that are often present in the environment at low levels.
