Gandhi’s Moral Philosophy

Political in our day-to-day understanding is an all comprehensive term. Mostly it has bee used to mean State Politics that includes structure and functioning of a State as well as its correlation with other states. Politics used as a Science of state or an academic discipline which is not competent to change the image of politics, which is understood as an activity centering round power and very often devoid of simples. Etymologically, politics comes from the Greek root 'polis'. It implies the principles and applications that guided the governance of the Greek city-states. It should be remembered tat State was a holistic conception to the ancient Greeks, which covered every public activity of the citizens. In many Indian languages, politics has been called Rajniti.

Gandhism is a body of ideas that describes the inspiration, vision, and the life work of Mohandas Gandhi. It is particularly associated with his contributions to the idea of nonviolent resistance , sometimes also called civil resistance. The two pillars of Gandhism are truth and nonviolence. The term "Gandhism" also encompasses what Gandhi's ideas, words, and actions mean to people around the world and how they used them for guidance in building their own future. Gandhism also permeates into the realm of the individual human being, non-political and non-social.

Professor Iyer elucidates the central concepts in the moral and political thought of Mahatma Gandhi, bringing out the subtlety, potency, and universal importance of his concepts of truth and non-violence, freedom and obligation, and his view of the relation between means and ends in politics. Gandhi's indictment of modern civilization, his conception of an unassailable moral commitment, his vision of human perfectibility, and his perception of the role of individual conscience and of heroism in society are all carefully considered in this volume. Enriched by allusions to a wide range of political thinkers, classical and modern, the book makes a significant contribution to contemporary thinking on a global scale about the relevance of moral values to political actions. The Concord Grove Press edition is currently out of stock. Gandhi wanted to find place in his conception of the State both for active loyalty and for the sacred right of disobedience. He no doubt came closer to the anarchist than to the absolutist view of the State, insofar as he thought a stateless society was conceivable, but he wished to leave it open to the citizen to decide in any given State, inevitably imperfect and unavoidably coercive, whether he felt obliged to show active loyalty or total opposition to that particular State, to resist none or all or a few of its laws. The onus of responsibility lies upon the conscience of the citizen, who is required to uphold satya and display ahimsa.

Mohandas K. Gandhi was an influential figure in the history of India and modern Indian political theory who gained international fame for his effective ideologies. Gandhi acknowledged traditional concepts and symbols but without reluctance introduced interpretations and ideas from foreign to Indian culture that shows the importance of Western humanism in his approach. He contrasted Western technology on the basis that the machine civilization brought with it the mistreatment of men and the concentration of power. In this respect, he trailed Tolstoi, whose writings, with those of Thoreau and others, he studied while in South Africa. He tried out of different modes of political action and different types of political program. The influence of Gokhale on his thought is enthusiastically ostensible, as is the impact of the element of Indian nationalist political thought signified by Tilak.

Its main contention is that peace cannot be achieved by politics alone. Peace requires the confluence of the four canonical ends of life: politics and economics artha , ethics dharma , forms of pleasure kama , and the pursuit of spiritual transcendence moksha. Modern political philosophy isolates politics from the other three ends. Gandhi corrects this error. Therein lie his originality and importance. Gandhi reaches his conclusion by reinterpreting the Indian theory of the four canonical ends of life. In his interpretation, these four must not operate in isolation from one another.

Gandhian political theory has been broadly debated from two important perspectives. One argument places Gandhian political theory as a relative or a reconciled pattern of both western and eastern traditions. The other argument suggests that Gandhi is an original thinker, in the sense that he is a unique innovator of political concepts, inherently based on Indian traditions. In this way, it can be argued that Gandhi developed a distinctive as well as an alternative version of political theory compared to western notion of political theory. However, he himself did not believe in any such absolute predictions or prescriptive norms of truth. He believed in no permanent truth except God and discarded his own ideas by saying that they are as old as the Himalayas. He also nullified the fact that there is nothing specific about Gandhism.
