As part of a larger project on human bodies and theological knowledge, this paper is a preliminary investigation into how biology and physicality shape human knowing. It asks whether, in the frequent use of the phrase embodied knowing or embodied theology , religion scholars have paid sufficient attention to actual bodies. It argues that there has been a lapse of attention to physical dimensions of bodies in the unreflective employment of such phrases, ironically among practical and pastoral theologians who have strong interest in understanding how theology operates on the ground.

A companion to the anthropology of the body and embodiment

For much of the history of western philosophy the body has been conceptualized as simply one biological object among others, part of a biological nature, which our rational faculties set us apart from, as well as an instrument to be directed, and a possible source of disruption to be controlled. Problematically, for feminists, the opposition between mind and body has also been correlated with an opposition between male and female, with the female regarded as enmeshed in her bodily existence in a way that makes attainment of rationality questionable. Such enmeshment in corporeality was also attributed to colonized bodies and those attributed to the lower classes McClintock , Alcoff Challenging such assumptions requires feminists to confront corporeality in order to elucidate and confront constructions of sexed difference. The accounts of the relationship between subjectivity, corporeality and identity which have thereby been developed have implications for other aspects of our corporeal existence.

Wiley Online Library Sample Chapter. The authors in A Companion to the Anthropology of the Body and Embodiment utilize studies of bodily experience to launch powerful refutations of abstract, universalizing models and ideologies, and provide new far-reaching analyses of gender, racial, and sexual difference and of bodies embedded in a range of political-economic contexts, including colonialism, late capitalism, neoliberalism, and post-socialism. Exploring body politics, embodiment, the senses, affect, and emotion, Mascia-Lees brings together a key group of scholars to examine historical and contemporary approaches to, and conceptualizations of, the body. A Companion to the Anthropology of the Body and Embodiment offers original essays that examine historical and contemporary approaches to conceptualizations of the body. All rights reserved. Feminist Perspectives on the Body

In social scientific research on narratives it's not uncommon that the body is left out of the analysis. In a comment on the state of the art in narrative studies, the British sociologist Brett Smith wrote:. Narrative researchers should not simply be content with theories and conceptual musing on and about the body. We also might turn our attention to generating stories from and with actual lived and living human bodies […]. Indeed, we tell stories about, in, out of, and through our bodies. Likewise, as a resource, stories from outside our bodies endow us with a sense of interior, subjective reality Show page numbers Download PDF.

A Companion to the Anthropology of the Body and Embodiment

An embodied spirituality: Perspectives for a bodily pastoral anthropology. Important new developments within practical theology and, in particular, within pastoral theology have taken place over the past decades. In terms of a post-foundational practical theology, this article endeavours from a hermeneutical perspective to explore overlaps between various domains of sciences. As part of a re-described spiritual embodied anthropology, it is claimed that the mind-body dualism is outdated and that the roots of human corporeality are to be rediscovered. The article investigates the effect of an emphasis on the biological for a pastoral anthropology in terms of its implications for one's concept of God, one's view on personal identity, the affirmation of being relation-orientated, and the importance of context.

3. Sexual Difference

Embodied Knowing, Embodied Theology: What Happened to the Body?

- Solo. - Echo un poco de Smirnoff?
