Formerly Psychology was studied as a sub-branch of philosophy. When physiologists of the late nineteenth century began to use scientific methods to study the mind and its working, Psychology became an independent scientific discipline. Education and Psychology Education is a process which enables the individual to distinguish between true and false, good and bad, right and wrong. Education is concerned with human ends and the means of promoting them. Psychology is concerned with understanding and gaining knowledge of human experience and actions.

What is the Difference Between Educational Psychology and School Psychology?

Psychology is closely related to education. Education is the modification of behaviour in a desirable direction or in a controlled environment and psychology is the study of behaviour or science of behaviour. To modify the behaviour or to bring about some changes in the behaviour it is necessary to study the science of behaviour. Thus, education and psychology are logically related. The developmental stages of children and characteristics are very essential factors which the teacher must know in order to be a successful teacher. The traditional education was subject centered and teacher dominated.

Although educational and developmental psychology should inform each other, it is unusual when they do so. Three reasons are offered for the differences between the two psychologies. First, the content of research and purposes for choosing that content are different. Second, the significance of developmental sequences is different for the two psychologies, and the role of values in developmental sequences also differs. And third, there are differences in the search for biologically constrained laws of human cognitive development versus schooling effects. It is suggested that the two psychologies can inform each other. The zone where the two psychologies meet, the zone of educational-developmental psychology, is an emergent area which is neither developmental nor educational psychology as traditionally practiced, but it takes elements from both.

Psychology can simply be defined as the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. This is a discipline that encompasses a wide range of sub-disciplines such as abnormal psychology, social psychology , developmental psychology so on and so forth. Educational psychology is also one such sub-discipline which falls under the main discipline of psychology. Educational psychology pays specific attention to the study of learning throughout the human life span. So the main difference between psychology and educational psychology stems from the fact that while psychology in general possesses a broader view which entails all aspects of human life, educational psychology pays specific attention to the learning process. For many years, humans have been fascinated by the capabilities of the human mind that led to the establishment of a discipline known as psychology.

Educational psychology

The primary purpose of an Educational Psychology program is to prepare students for careers in teaching and research at institutions of higher learning or research consortiums. By contrast, School Psychology is a practitioner-based field and therefore the program includes practicum and internship components in order to prepare students for careers as School Psychologists. Educational Psychologists do not have clinical duties but often contribute to preservice teacher training programs by teaching classes related to psychological theories of learning, classroom assessment, and developmental psychology courses. A few examples of the differences between Educational Psychology and School Psychology are as follows again, remember that the interests and application of these disciplines is often at the discretion of the scholar :. But there are some educational psychology programs, which include the coursework or fieldwork necessary for credentialing as a school psychologist. Some states may also offer licensure, such as California. Usually state-certified to deliver services to students through a school system.

Relationship Between Education and Psychology

Educational psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the scientific study of human learning. The study of learning processes, from both cognitive and behavioral perspectives, allows researchers to understand individual differences in intelligence , cognitive development, affect, motivation , self-regulation, and self-concept, as well as their role in learning. The field of educational psychology relies heavily on quantitative methods, including testing and measurement, to enhance educational activities related to instructional design, classroom management, and assessment, which serve to facilitate learning processes in various educational settings across the lifespan. Educational psychology can in part be understood through its relationship with other disciplines. It is informed primarily by psychology , bearing a relationship to that discipline analogous to the relationship between medicine and biology.

Educational psychology involves the study of how people learn , including topics such as student outcomes, the instructional process, individual differences in learning, gifted learners, and learning disabilities. Psychologists who work in this field are interested in how people learn and retain new information.

The main difference between psychology and educational psychology is that psychology refers to the overall study of human condition and behaviour while educational psychology specifically studies the psychological issues concerned with human education and learning.
