The two-electrode gas switch has been widely used in ShengGuang-III power conditioning system, while due to triggered by a negative high-voltage nanosecond pulse, high frequency transient overvoltage could be inevitably produced and transmit in the power conditioning system, leading to insulation and electromagnetic interference problems.

In order to increase the reliability of the power conditioning system, the triggering process was analyzed and simulated by using PSPICE simulation software, a high-frequency ceramic capacitor was proposed as the suppressing device to reduce the transient overvoltage. Emulational and experimental results showed a good agreement on the waveforms of the transient overvoltage and the suppression effect of the ceramic capacitor. ICF inertial confinement fusion drivers were large-scale precision optical facilities used for research on ICF.

The power conditioning system PCS was one of the most important components in ICF drivers, the reliability and stability of the PCS was closely related to the reliability, stability, energy conversion efficiency and the total cost of the laser driver system [ 4 ]. As the trigger pulse was relative high and very fast, high frequency overvoltage could be produced and transmitted in the PCS during the breakdown process, if the amplitude of the transient overvoltage reaches to the basic insulation level of the PCS, the insulation performance could be deteriorated and damaged followed by the possible insulation failure.

The supervision, communication and record system also can be interfered when switching, consequently, the total reliability of PCS could be decreased. It was therefore imperative and necessary to suppress the transit overvoltage in PCS.

The magnitude of the transient overvoltage depended on the parameters of trigger generator and discharge circuits such as inductance, resistance, as well as the grounding parameters of the system. In the SG-III power conditioning system, the compact Marx generator was used as the trigger generator and single- grounded system was adopted for safety consideration [ 6 , 7 ], in order to analyze the transient overvoltage and use an appropriate protective method, the transient overvoltage was simulated by building a simulation model, the software of PSPICE was adopted for computing the switching overvoltage.

The PSPICE was a universal program for digital simulation of transient phenomena, the models of the Marx generator and the discharge circuit of the PCS were built and analyzed, high voltage ceramic capacitors were used as the transient overvoltage suppression device due to its low impedance under high frequency pulse and high impedance under low frequency. The triggering process of the two-electrode gas switch can be treated as a nanosecond pulse applied on a non-linear load.

From Fig. While the impedance of the second transmission way was relatively high, thus the transient overvoltage was mainly decided by the first way. While the parameter of the gas switch was different before and after breakdown, before breakdown, the gas switch was equivalent to a capacitive load and the capacitance was very small, the trigger pulse was mainly act on the gas switch to guarantee the breakdown process.

After breakdown, an arc was formed between the anode and cathode, the equivalent impedance of the gas switch was described as a resistor and an inductor connect in series, and the equivalent impedance of the gas switch become very small, result in the potential on the PCS increasing, especially on the damping inductor.

The amplitude of the transient overvoltage on the A spot can be very high and can be represent the level of the transient overvoltage in the PCS. In order to suppress the transient overvoltage, low impedance circuit for the high frequency trigger pulse to the ground could be effective. As the ceramic capacitor had the advantage of excellent high frequency response performance [ 8 ], the ceramic capacitor could be suitable as a bypass device for the PCS.

The ceramic capacitor can be connected in parallel with the damping inductor and main capacitor as shown in Fig. The value of the ceramic capacitor must be considered carefully for it can influence the suppression effect after breakdown. So, we need to simulate the influence of different value of capacitance on the amplitude of transient overvoltage, and choose an appropriate value of capacitance for the PCS. The trigger generator in SG-III power conditioning system was a compact Marx generator, as the Marx generator can be simplified as a RLC discharging circuit [ 9 ], the equivalent capacitor and resistance can be obtained by measurements, the equivalent inductor can be calculated by the empirical formula.

The equivalent circuit of Marx generator was shown in Fig. Based on the equivalent circuit, we can got the voltage waveform at the output side of the cable:. The results showed that the two waveforms were approximately same, which indicated that the simulation model was rational. The main discharge circuit of the SG-III power condition system was carefully designed to output appropriate current pulse to pump the flashlamps [ 12 ], most of the circuit parameters can be obtained by measurement.

While the two-electrode gas switch cannot be regarded directly as a simple equivalent parameter, as the gas switch had structure capacitance before breakdown, arc inductance and impedance when turned on. The resistance of the gas switch was not easily obtained by formula, the empirical estimate result was sufficient for our simulation, according to Ref. The magnetic switch can be treated as a nonlinear inductive components, the inductance was very high before saturation and became low after saturation [ 14 ]. The equivalent inductance of the magnetic switch before saturation was 0. As the operating voltage of the main capacitor was The influence of the high voltage ceramic capacitor on suppressing the transient overvoltage was also simulated.

The effect of the ceramic capacitor was measured in veridical experiments. The waveform of the transient overvoltage on the damping inductor was shown in Fig. By using the high voltage ceramic capacitor, the interference on communication and record system was eliminated and high reliability was obtained during the later times discharge experiments.

The emulational and experimental results showed that the amplitude of the transient overvoltage can reach twice of the operating voltage, leading to serious interference on supervision, communication and recording system. Thus EMC design methods were necessary and urgent. According to the analysis of the triggering process, a high frequency ceramic capacitor was used as the suppressing device to reduce the amplitude of the transient overvoltage, the emulational and experimental results showed a good agreement on reducing the transient overvoltage in the main discharge circuit, which indicated this method was effective and have been successful used in SG-III power conditioning system.
