Oral literature, the standard forms or genres of literature found in societies without writing.

Consider how African literature has evolved over time, from oral stories and Egyptian hieroglyphs to the novels, poems, and plays of today. As George Joseph notes on the first page of his chapter on African literature in Understanding Contemporary Africa, while the European perception of literature generally refers to written letters, the African concept includes oral literature. African literatures are of high literary quality. That's because, prior to colonialism, much of African literature was oral literature… African literature possessing those qualities that define it as such. African literature has a long history stretching back over thousands of years.

What Are The Differences Between Oral And Written Literature?

Oral literature or folk literature is a literature that is spoken or sung as opposed to that which is written , though much oral literature has been transcribed. A broad conceptualization refers to it as literature characterized by oral transmission and the absence of any fixed form. It includes the stories, legends, and history passed from generations in a spoken form. Pre-literate societies, by definition, have no written literature, but may possess rich and varied oral traditions —such as folk epics , folk narratives including fairy tales and fables , folk drama , proverbs and folksongs —that effectively constitute an oral literature. Even when these are collected and published by scholars such as folklorists and paremiographers , the result is still often referred to as "oral literature".

Oral literature , the standard forms or genres of literature found in societies without writing. The term oral literature is also used to describe the tradition in written civilizations in which certain genres are transmitted by word of mouth or are confined to the so-called folk i. Oral literature is, arguably, the best phrase available for describing these two senses. The term oral covers both, but these two meanings should be distinguished. While certain forms, such as the folktale, continue to exist, especially among the unlettered component of complex societies, what might also be called oral tradition or folk literature is inevitably influenced by the elite written culture.

Forms of Written Literature

Vincent Ferraro and Kathryn C. Most of us intuitively understand that there are differences between oral and written language. All communication includes the transfer of information from one person to another, and while the transfer of information is only the first step in the process of understanding a complex phenomenon, it is an important first step. Writing is a fairly static form of transfer. Speaking is a dynamic transfer of information.

Oral literature is a broad term which may include ritual texts, curative chants, epic poems, musical genres, folk tales, creation tales, songs, myths, spells, legends, proverbs, riddles, tongue-twisters, word games, recitations, life histories or historical narratives. Most simply, oral literature refers to any form of verbal art which is transmitted orally or delivered by word of mouth. Orature is a more recent and less widely used term which emphasises the oral character and nature of literary works. In African Oral Literature for Schools , Jane Nandwa and Austin Bukenya define oral literature as "those utterances, whether spoken, recited or sung, whose composition and performance exhibit to an appreciable degree the artistic character of accurate observation, vivid imagination and ingenious expression" 1.

- Viste el anillo?

To begin with, strictly speaking, there is no such thing as “oral literature.” The term literature is derived from the Latin word for “letter” (also derived from that word).
