As one of the five poems that make up the " Lucy series ", the work describes the relationship between Lucy and nature using words and sentiments. The author creates an impression of the indifference of nature as the poem progresses. Although Nature is indifferent, it also cares for Lucy enough to both sculpt and mould her into its own. Wordsworth valued connections to nature above all else. The poem thus contains both epithalamic and elegiac characteristics; the marriage described is between Lucy and nature, while her human lover is left to mourn in the knowledge that death has separated her from mankind, and she will forever now be with nature.

William Wordsworth In this poem Wordsworth personified Nature. He points out the education of nature, and the great influence nature can exercise on human life. Nature has the power to impart education better than all the sages can. The experiment of nature's education has to be tried on Lucy by Nature itself.

The poem begins with the personified Nature noticing Lucy at three years old. Nature thinks she is the most beautiful thing on earth, and promises to take her to make "A Lady of [her] own":. Nature then expounds on what it means to be Nature's lady for several stanzas. Nature promises to make Lucy into a part of nature itself. She will be a part of the rocks, the earth, the heaven, the glades, the mountain springs, the clouds, the trees, and the storms. In addition, Lucy will fully enjoy nature and understand it.

In this poem, the poet takes up Nature as the greatest teacher possible. Lucy has grown amidst the beauty of Nature for three years when it was decided that Nature would take up the responsibility of her education. She seems to be the most the beautiful entity on earth and Nature proclaims that Lucy will be the finest flower that will eventually bloom and blossom into a Lady. Lucy will be created in the image of Nature and her well-being will be of immediate attention to Nature. Nature then goes on to explain and expound how she will bring up a Lucy.
